(Click on the image for more views)
This pattern is called "clos des oliviers" which means olive grove. The olive tree has been a part of the Mediterranean region for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks used to smear olive oil on their bodies and hair as a matter of grooming and good health. Through the years, the olive branch has become a symbol of peace, wisdom, glory, fertility, power and pureness. A number of Greek and Roman writings refer to the olive and its beneficial role in their respective cultures. References to the olive are found in both the Bible and the Qur'an. It is estimated that the cultivation of the olive began more than 7,000 years ago. The Russians also participated in spreading the olive throughout Eurasia.

After the 16th century, olives were brought to the New World by the Europeans. Since then the olive has been cultivated in California, Mexico, Peru, Chile, and Argentina. It is thought that there are approximately 800 million olive trees in the world, and most of these are found in Mediterranean countries.

(Click on the image for additional views)
This pattern is called cigales / olive (cicada and olive) after an insect that lives for 2-5 years in the ground and then lives 5 to 6 weeks outside of the ground before dying. In France, the cicada is used to represent the folklore of Provence and other Mediterranean cities. The cicada is a summer insect that has come to represent a carefree approach to life. In fact, one of Aesop's fables (The Cicada and the Ant) share the story of the cicada who spends the summer singing while the ant stores away food, and when the cold winter comes the cicada has no food.

This pattern is called MCL for “mimosa, citron and lavande” (in English - mimosa, lemon, and lavender). The mimosa tree is a kind of acacia with golden flowers. It is originally from Australia. This fragrant tree brightens the landscape along the sea from Marseille to Nice during the winter time. The city of Nice's symbol is a yellow candy representing the mimosa flower.

There are over 200 varieties of lavender and 28 different species of the plant. The colors of the lavender range from white and pink to all shades of blue and purple. This flower blooms from the middle of June through August.

This tablecloth comes in red, blue or green backgrounds. The size fits a table that seats six people (96 inches long by 60 inches wide). It will fit any table between 70 and 80 inches with a skirt between 13 and 18 inches.

This pattern is called "petits citrons" (little lemons). The traditional Provencal pattern consists of lemons, sunflowers, wheat, and olives.

Every year, the city of Menton hosts a wonderful event called “la fete du citron” that locals and thousands of tourists enjoy during the month of February. In 1934, the festival was created to bring life to the city during the winter months. The main attraction is the parade of giants statues made out of citrus fruits.

In France, the cicada is used to represent the folklore of Provence and other Mediterranean cities. The cicada is a summer insect that has come to represent a carefree approach to life.
